Lip Augmentation using Dermal Filler (Temporary)
There are an expanding range of dermal fillers available on the market that can be utilised to fill the lip area. The most common are Restylane, Perlane and the Juvederm range. Permanent fillers are also enjoying a resurgence in the market.

Restylane
Restylane is one of the most popular and well known of the dermal and cosmetic fillers with an estimated 4 million Restylane treatments carried out worldwide to date. Based on non animal derived hylauronic acid, Restylane is utilized to smooth wrinkles and enhance lips instantly with no patient pre testing required. Between 50-80% of Restylane patients will have effects that remain after 6 months with the Restylane naturally integrating into the tissue and dissolving naturally with time. Restylane has the ability to bind with the bodies own hylauronic acid for a plumping effect making it  ideal for lip enhancement, with the product available in varying gel sizes to treat different areas of the face.

Juvederm
Juvaderm offers a longer lasting and natural looking rejuvenation effect with the product lasts for between six to 10 months before requiring a fresh injection. The manufactures of Juvederm have made it as long lasting as possible by concentrating the product and using a process that generates a dense network of bridge type bonds between different molecules of hylauronic acid creating larger molecules of the acid. The resultant larger molecules are more resistant to breakdown which allows for the longer lasting effect of Juvederm. The Juvederm product is manufactured using a bactericidal fermentation process and does not contain any animal product.

Perlane
Perlane offers a natural, non permanent dermal filler containing a man made version of the hylauronic acid gel. Similar to the body’s own naturally occurring hylauronic acid, the filler binds water to itself underneath the skin causing a plumping action to occur, smoothing out and filling in the particular wrinkle being treated.
Perlane is ideal for gently and instantly plumping the lips, diminishing fine lines around the mouth and smoothing fine to moderate facial lines and wrinkles.
Lip Augmentation using Dermal Filler (Permanent)
Occasionally a doctor or nurse may offer a permanent filler which is a long lasting product that is non-absorbable. The filler product adds volume to the lips in much the same way as a temporary filler does but the results can stay in place unchanged for up to 10 year. Ageing of the skin can required more permanent filler to be injected and the results are immediate.

Procedure
Prior to lip augmentation with filler a topical cream may be used to numb the lip area as this is can be a sensitive area for some clients. The actual lip filler product has an anaesthetic combined to minimalise any discomfort and there is an option of a dental block prior to treatment though this is not widely used as it can cause excessive swelling and bruising to the area.
In some cases a small needle is utilised but also common is a technique that used a cannula or bunt ended ‘needle’ that can significantly reduce the amount of swelling and bruising to minimise any downtime.
The dermal filler product is injected into the fullness or the border of the lip area depending upon the results that the practitioner wishes to achieve.

Dermal Filler Recovery
Swelling with lip filler occurs immediately and ice packs may be offered to reduce this and avoid bruising to the area. Patients are reminded to not touch the area and apply the ice wrapped in gauze every couple of hours. Lips may also dry out in the first 12-24 hours so using a lip balm can help.
The lip area is sensitive to swelling and it may be up to a week whilst the swelling dissipates with full effects being seen within 2 weeks. At this stage the filler treatment will be reviewed by the practitioner. Small lumps are common at this time and can be massaged gently as they will absorb. If these lumps are larger or persist they can be corrected by the treating doctor or nurse.
