As the skin begins to age and loss of volume occurs one of the main areas on the face that reflects this is the eye area. There are a few main issues that occur in the eye area mainly hollowing of the tear troughs underneath the eyes and degeneration of skin and dark circles underneath the eyes. We can treat all of these issues with a couple of treatments.
Hollows under the eyes
Hollows under the eyes can be caused by a number of factors including hereditary issues, weight loss and tiredness. By utilising a dermal filler in this area the hollowing can be improved dramatically in a short space of time: It is important to use the correct dermal filler product in the area as we do not want to draw too much water to the eye area which is a large component of a dermal filler product. Using the wrong product or technique can also result in bubbles or lines of product in the area.
Procedure to Treat Under Eye Hollows
An anaesthetic cream may be applied to the area for treatment 20 minutes or so prior to the procedure. The treatment is delivered using a pre filled syringe equipped with a very fine needle which is injected into the dermal layer of the skin. Generally 3 or 4 injections are required and a cannula may be used to avoid excessive bruising in the area.
With the correct product and careful injecting into the eye area the skin can be filled and smoothed with results lasting up to 18 months.
Dermal Filler Recovery
The majority of patients can return to normal life immediately following a dermal or cosmetic filler treatment to the chin area. The effects can be seen immediately and depending upon the area treated and the product used, results can last for between six and ten months. There may be a small amount of swelling or bruising at the site of the injection which will generally settle down over the following 48 hours with patients recommended not to touch the treated area. Some patients may feel the requirement to use a mild painkiller containing paracetamol for a few days following treatment
Improving Dark Circles and Texture under the Eyes
One of the most effective treatments to improve the texture of the under eye area is with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). Utilising the bodies own plasma it is a natural treatment which can improve crepey skin texture and elasticity underneath the eyes. Plasma in blood product contains a high concentration of platelets which are essential for skin cell regeneration and for the healing of injury to the skin. It is these natural growth factors and stem cells which provide the skin rejuvenation particularly effective in the under eye area.
PRP treatment is also highly effective for treating dark circles underneath the eye area. In many cases dark circles in this area are hereditary and it is impossible to remove this darkness completely. One very effective treatment is to thicken and improve the texture of the skin in this area which helps to minimise the look. For full skin rejuvenation in PRP the treatment yields more than 8 times the amount of plasma found naturally in blood causing thickening and skin regeneration on a larger scale.
PRP Procedure
PRP therapy under the eyes is a simple treatment. The doctor administering the treatment will draw about 10ccs of blood from the patient. This blood is then placed into a centrifuge machine. The centrifuge machine spins the blood, separating the components in the process. The platelets are then collected and injected into the under eye area. The process is relatively painless and most people report minimal discomfort. The process takes between 20 and 40 minutes.
PRP Recovery
Immediately following treatment skin will display a flushed appearance but there is minimal downtime and normal activities can be resumed. There may be some minor swelling in the associated areas which generally subsides within a 24 hour period. Some patients may notice slight bruising or swelling in the area but this is normal.
Treatment must be performed every 3-4 weeks for around 5 times to achieve optimum results. A top up treatment may be required at the 8-9 months point.
Results will become visible after 3-4 months and will gradually improve over the following months.
