PRP to treat hair loss

Platelet Rich Plasma treatment commonly known as PRP is a treatment that has increased in popularity over the last few years to treat a number of common conditions including male hair loss. When combined with the effects of medically performed skin needling the procedure has been shown to stimulate hair follicles to encourage new hair growth in the treatment area. This treatment has been used to counteract male pattern baldness and has also been proven effective in the treatment of Alopecia.

PRP works upon the principle of hair follicles receiving adequate nutrition from blood supply. If the hair roots in the area are healthy then the growth of the hair is healthy. By introducing platelet rich plasma to the area of the damaged follicles we are amplifying the bodies natural wound healing. Doctors believe PRP treatment can stimulate the growth if hair follicles in the area of treatment.

Procedure
An anaesthetic cream is applied to the area for between 15-45 minuets depending upon the strength of the cream. This ensures that only the slightest of discomfort is experienced during the treatment.
The process of PRP treatment for hair loss first requires the use of needle rolling in the scalp area which penetrate the layer of skin where the hair follicles are located. A blood sample is extracted from here which is then placed into a centrifuge for 5 minutes. once this process is completed in the centrifuge the essential plasma is separated from the red blood cells. It is these platelets extracted from the base of the plasma gel that is utilised in the injection process.

The piercing with the dermal roller creates a number of minute skin wounds in the skin where the Platelet Rich Plasma can then be infused in small amounts. The fact that the skin remains mainly intact and there is minimal damage increases the bodies regeneration process to wound heal the area: It is this wound healing which effects the growth factors in the follicular bulge area where the stem cells are located. In turn this activates what is known as the proliferative phase of the hair grow cycle. It is this cycle which results in the thicker and regenerated hair growth.

PRP Recovery
Immediately following treatment skin will display a flushed appearance but there is minimal downtime and normal activities can be resumed. There may be some minor swelling in the associated areas which generally subsides within a 24 hour period. Some patients may notice slight bruising or swelling in the area but this is normal.
Treatment must be performed every 3-4 weeks for around 5 times to achieve optimum results. A top up treatment may be required at the 8-9 months point.
Results will become visible after 3-4 months and will gradually improve over the following months.

Side Effects
After effects with PRP treatment if minimal with associated swelling generally subsiding within hours to a few days. As the blood product is a natural source from your own body there is no risk of allergy or reaction and no scaring or pigmentation issues.
